Winter Livestock Water: Keep Tanks From Freezing Without (or With) Electricity

In winter, water is the limit on everything else. Cold, clean, available water keeps cattle eating and holding condition — here is how to keep it flowing when the temperature drops.

Why frozen water costs you

Animals will not eat what they cannot wash down. When water freezes or gets ice-cold, intake drops, feed intake drops with it, and condition slides right when cold weather demands the most energy. Reliable winter water is not a convenience — it is herd performance and welfare.

Keeping water open without electricity

  • Energy-free insulated fountains. Heavily insulated waterers with float-balls the animal pushes aside to drink. Heat rising from water below the frost line keeps them open down to brutal temperatures — no power required. The gold standard for off-grid winter water.
  • Frost-free hydrants & buried lines. Run supply lines below your frost line and use frost-free hydrants that drain back below grade after each use so there is nothing to freeze.
  • Continuous / overflow flow. A small constant trickle through a trough keeps ice from forming, where you can spare the water and manage the runoff.
